Queer Tango Marathon started in Buenos Aires

A gay tango marathon started last night in various venues in the city. An uninterrupted 42 hours of tango is taking place until tomorrow along with lectures and discussions on gender, marriage law and sexual identity, by specialists.

Queer Tango Marathon is free and it aims at broadening tango perspectives. The event also offers classes, art exhibitions, lectures and discussions sponsored by the National Institute Against Discrimination (INADI), national ministries of Justice and Culture of Buenos Aires and Instituto Universitario Nacional de Arte (IUNA), among others.

The marathon started last night at 22.30 after a class at Chalmers Club, in Palermo Viejo, and it ended at 6.30 to go on in Archibrazo cafe, Almagro, until 13 hs. Then, it went on outdoors in Manzana de las Luces, until 21.30 hs.

At that time the milonga starts at Hotel Bauen, which will include queer “folklore”until 9, with the participation of María Volonté, godmother of Queer Tango Marathon.

The centerpiece of the marathon is to dance freely “and it will focus on the practice and refinement of tango dancing. 42 hours, 49 minutes and 50 seconds of uninterrupted dance will be accompanied by several workshops with different dance styles and talks in Manzana de las Luces.

An organizer of the event, Mariano Garcés, who is alos in charge of the classes and workshops, explained that “the intent of this experience is to enable everyone who may not have public spaces to express themselves, such as transsexuals, transvestites, transgender and others, to do so.”
